Rebooting a PC may sound quite complicated but it doesn’t need to be so. A computer is an important machine that has become an essential part of the day to day tasks of modern living. No matter what type of machine you own, whether it’s a desktop computer or the lightweight, portable version we commonly call “laptops”, knowing the basics when something goes wrong is an essential knowledge that a computer owner must possess.

Have you ever suffered from computers that hang for almost an hour and refused to be controlled or shutdown using the ways you know? If you already did then you might have missed to do this thing called a “reboot”.

Ways of Doing a Computer Reboot

There are 2 known ways of rebooting a PC which you can try for yourself. One is called a “soft reboot” and the other is known as the “hard reboot”. Both works perfectly depending on the type of problem you have. A soft reboot is commonly needed for computers that suffered minor system hangs or other related errors which causes some programs to stop working properly. A hard reboot on the other hand serves best for major system problems like a computer that has been logging on for almost an hour or a totally unresponsive screen where nothing is clickable anymore of the shutdown button is inaccessible anymore.

Soft PC Reboot

If your machine has a program that is unresponsive or something that keeps on loading but is not opened after a long period of time then you are suffering from an internal error that needs to be fixed. A soft reboot is needed for this type of problem. It is easily done by clicking the windows logo on the lower left corner of your computer screen and choosing the arrow right button just beside the shutdown button. When you already did that you just simply need to click the “Restart” option and you’re done!

Hard PC Reboot

A hard PC reboot is needed if your computer has been on one window and stays there for almost an hour and the options are inaccessible or are refusing to be clicked. This is a major problem that might have been caused by a program or a memory error which can only be fixed by executing a hard reboot. Hard Rebooting your computer will fix all program and system errors and will restore everything to the normal state. This is done by pressing on the power button and holding it for about 5-7 seconds until the computer has powered down. Once the power is down, wait for about 15-20 seconds more before turning the machine on again.

The Effects

Both types of rebooting your computer may cause data loss. It is always recommended that you save any work you are doing before rebooting your pc. You can do it by using the keys just in case the mouse pointer is not working. Using the arrow keys and the tab button as well as the enter button will help you navigate your window and access the file folder where you can save your work. Always do it the safe soft reboot way and avoid doing the hard reboot often if possible.
