What is a Computer Virus?

By definition, computer viruses are executable programs that can reproduce or replicate and disrupt a computer’s normal operation. The spread of computer viruses started in the late 1970’s when floppy disks were used widely by computer owners to exchange and save files. Viruses were primarily transferred to another computer through this mode of storage. Viruses attach themselves on any part of program especially those which are executed upon starting up a computer. At present, viruses are transferred through networks and the internet.

How Does A Computer Virus Work?

There are two types of viruses and they are identified on the way they replicate once they come in contact with your computer’s hard drive. These types are known as “Nonresident viruses” and “Resident viruses”. The difference between these two are explained below.

Nonresident Computer Virus

A nonresident computer virus is also known as a finder virus. It is consist of a module that searches and infects a new file that is compatible to its configuration and a module that replicates and infects any executable file that the finder module is able to find. This type of computer virus is harmful because it usually operates as a background program and is not easily noticed by any computer owner.

Resident Computer Virus

A resident computer virus also contains a module for replication but it doesn’t need to be summoned by a finder module. The virus program is simply loaded to the memory, once it is executed and does the same infecting process to other files; it will be doing the same process every time you use the affected programs on your PC or even every moment that you turn your machine on. This type of virus is capable of infecting a lot of files on your computer with the use of a fast infector, but doing so will also increase the chances of it being detected by an antivirus program.

What does a Computer Virus Do?

A computer virus infects files on your computer especially those that are used in the boot up process. Once a computer is infected by a virus, processes become slower to load and programs become more susceptible to “crashes” and internal memory errors. Other computer viruses may also erase or corrupt important documents and files on your computer making it inaccessible. Still, there are powerful viruses that can totally erase your hard drive’s memory and even damage your computer’s hard disk.

Preventing Computer Viruses

Computer viruses are quite easy to prevent using antivirus programs. There are lots of antivirus programs available on the internet today which can be purchased using a credit or a debit card. Installing an antivirus program is an effective way of preventing computer viruses from spreading in your computer’s memory. USB antivirus is also useful in preventing the spread of viruses through a USB mass storage device.

Performing a regular wide memory scan will also lessen the chances of any computer virus from spreading. Viruses are normally detected by your antivirus program and are immediately moved to a place where it is incapable of executing itself and infecting other important files in your computer. The antivirus software you purchased is also capable of deleting viruses and other malicious programs from your computer.

Viruses have been hard at work ever since the Internet was opened to the public. Corrupted files damaged hard drives and useless programs all come as a result of a virus infection. The Internet has become a very effective way of transmitting these harmful programs which results to an exponential rate of infection all around the world affecting millions of users. With these things in mind, purchasing and installing antivirus to your computer could come as a first thought and would be the best decision you would ever make.

Viruses at Present

Trojans, worms and other forms of malware and spyware can prove to have devastating effects to most computers at present. These malicious and harmful programs commonly stay on the watch for any security breach on your machine while you are connected to the Internet and exploit any instance once it finds one. Stronger forms of viruses can even render your system useless and have all your files inaccessible and unrecoverable. Identity theft using spyware is also a trend at present affecting thousands of computer users around the world who make the mistake of saving financial information on unprotected and unsecure locations on computers.

What Antivirus Software Can Offer

  • Real Time Protection Against Viruses

Scanning file signature is done by most antivirus software to detect malware and other viruses. Relatively good antivirus software has about 20,000 to 60,000 virus definitions on its database which is used to compare incoming files with definitions on the database to distinguish viruses easily and put it to quarantine at once. Most computers slow down a little bit when antivirus scans some files due to the massive database contents it has but it has to happen to protect your computer against harm real-time!

  • Virus Protection On-Demand

On demand virus protection means that it is initiated by the user. This happens when a computer user executes a virus scan on a folder, file or a program before storing or installing it to the machine. This is a very effective way of protecting computers against viruses which are transmitted offline over storage media like USBs and other forms of file transfer not utilizing the Internet.

  • Additional Protection

Most antivirus software also contains additional components like spyware shield, email scanner, firewall and even game mode enhancements that can further enhance protection against all forms of viruses and malicious programs from any source.

Other Useful Components

Other versions of antivirus also have anti-spam, anti-spyware and link as well as email scanner. There’s even an identity protection on other brands that helps ensure 100% protection against any cyber-crimes and hackers that seeks to gain access to your critical files or simply destroy your computer.

Viruses are evolving at a fast pace at present. Protecting your computer is a big thing that should be considered to further counteract the destructive effects brought by these computer devils. Protect yourself and any investment that you have against theft and loss by installing quality virus protection software. Don’t take second thoughts. Do it today!

Hackers and malicious software developers have long been on the play ever since the Internet came into existence. These programs, codes and destructive algorithms tend to destroy files and even the installed programs on the computer acting as host or worst; it can even destroy hard drives. Finding out the destructive effects that computer viruses do brought software developers to decide creating programs that would counter these malicious often harmful viruses. This commenced the use of virus protection software also known as “antivirus”.

What is an Antivirus?

Virus protection programs commonly known as antivirus are applications for computers designed to detect and protect computers from viruses that can be harmful to files saved on its hard drive. Most antivirus programs especially the premium versions are effective in deleting and removing adware, malware and other harmful viruses out of your computer’s system.

What Does Antivirus Do to Protect Computers?

Antivirus programs provide superb protection for any computer system against potential threats like worms; bots, Trojans and other viruses in the online and offline environment. Identifying threats to your computer’s security and shield against identity theft also belong to the list of functions an antivirus performs to completely rid your machine away from things that can destroy its system and the hardware as well.

The level of safety that antivirus programs provide is essential in any setting whether at home, in your business or on your workplace. Most antivirus programs work by scanning each file against harmful codes and loops for replication while others check and scrutinize certificates and licenses of the publisher or developer of a certain stuff before it is allowed access to your system. This is an effective way of protecting you from losing critical work or business files and identity theft which are prevalent nowadays.

Further Protection

All antivirus programs automatically establish a network for surveillance that scans all files for any infection by comparing earlier versions of the file to identify loops and file integrity. The scanned files are then separated into two categories known as low and high-risk files. Most of the time, antivirus programs label a file infected by simply comparing file structure and integrity to the latest virus definition.

Normally, antivirus program developers charge you for license and for the purchase of the software as well. Purchasing in bulk for a business will entitle you for a discount but the price shouldn’t really matter when the security of your business and your office files are already put at stake.

The Trend at Present

Modern virus protection software has almost all that a computer owner needs to protect his/her machine against viruses transmitted through the Internet. Most have spyware, adware and malware shields which work best in disarming harmful programs and putting them into quarantine so it can’t infect other files further. Other antivirus also has an integrated internet security which shields host computers against hackers and emails containing virus attachments. Virus protection software companies also provide regular updates in virus definitions to help improve detection of viruses especially in today’s fast evolving viruses luring around the internet space.

Antivirus are great but there’s nothing far better than being prepared all the time. Setting up a backup for all critical files is always a good thing when antivirus stops working.

A computer, just like any investment you have needs to be protected. Computers are prone to a lot of security, hardware and software problems that can worsen if not solved right away. One common problem that a computer may suffer as you use it over time is a “crash”. Preventing this problem from happening proves to be a better step than solving or fixing the effects left after it occurs.

What Happens During a Crash?

Your computer contains a lot of information in the form of bits of data stored in your hard drive. Over time, these sets of data become mixed up and as you add more content to your computer like songs, pictures and other files important to you and the more games you install, the slower your computer becomes and the more likely it can crash at some point in time. A crash may occur when you run a lot of programs at the same time. It can also occur if you are fond of installing illegal software to your computer like those patch and crack versions offered in some sites. Internal memory crashes can also be caused by viruses, malware and adware that comes in contact with any file especially the executable ones.

Using an Antivirus Prevents Crashes

Your antivirus software can prevent crashes especially those that are caused by malware, adware or any other viruses that are luring around the cyberspace you usually surf and engage into. Antivirus software contains useful components that protect your system from any harm. Virus protection software protects you from crashes silently but effectively in the following ways:

  1. 1.       Scanning and moving harmful threats into a quarantine section

Virus protection software automatically moves a potential threat to a special quarantine folder where it is confined away from other files on your system. This prevents further infection on other files which commonly causes crashes.

  1. 2.       Automatic detection of any harmful software component

Most virus protection software is also able of automatically detecting any malicious component on crack and patch versions of software you are installing which renders the software useless so as to prevent other files from being corrupted and other system components from crashing.

  1. 3.       Malware and spyware protection

Almost all antivirus software at present has a malware and spyware protection component which shields your system against malicious software whenever you are connected to the internet. Most of these malicious programs are harmful especially when it gains access to some files on your RAM. Having one of this can cause a slow computer, frequent crashes and data loss.

Other Ways of Preventing Crashes

Limiting downloads to those that you only use and deleting unused files also works effectively in preventing crashes. Unused programs should also be uninstalled in order to free up some system resource (RAM) and hard disk space as well. Avoid storing too much data and running a lot of programs altogether. Windows also has free utilities like disk defragment and disk cleanup which can help organize files and cleanup the junks. Preventing your computer from crashing is just a matter of knowing your system capacity, protecting it with antivirus program and regularly cleaning it. Do these regularly and enjoy a crash-free machine!
